Bereavement Services
The Northumbria Healthcare Bereavement Support Service (previously Macmillan Support Service) has undergone some changes. The team are now based at North Tyneside General Hospital (Rake Lane). We offer bereavement support only, for adults 18+ who have experienced the loss of a loved one from an expected death. The service is available to adults living in or is registered with a GP in North Tyneside or Northumberland. There are currently hubs at Shields Hub, Wallsend Health Centre, Nursery Park Health Centre, Cramlington Health Centre.
The bereavement service provides a confidential, therapeutic listening service for adults (18+) who have are bereaved and experiencing a grief reaction and would benefit from one-to-one support.
All services are delivered either by fully trained bereavement support service volunteers with support from the bereavement support service coordinator or the coordinator and team lead. All volunteers have completed the Northumbria Healthcare Trust recruitment processes including a DBS and adhere to local policy and guidelines.
People who would like to use the service, or who might benefit from the bereavement service, will be referred by their GP, palliative care team or other health professional.
Other Resources:
The service can provide books and information for adults on loss, grief and bereavement. Also provide age-appropriate resource packs for children, including anticipatory grief and children with special educational needs.
